Ted Stiffel illuminated the functional world of lighting by designing lamps following the art deco and minimalist aesthetics of his day. Up until he formed his Chicago-based company in , most lamps -- except those made by Tiffany -- lacked any attractive appeal. Once Stiffel introduced artistic qualities to lamp designs, many companies copied him to create similar, but cheaper, lamps. One of the hallmarks of a Stiffel lamp besides its aesthetic appearance is its weight. All Stiffel lamps are carefully weighted. One clear indication you have a old-style Stiffel floor lamp is the light switch.

Stiffel lamp restoration
My mother gave me Stiffel lamps she received as a wedding gift 50 years ago. I believe that they are brass since a magnet does not stick to them. The base is 3 layers of square pads-like a tiered cake. They look like columns with a brass leaf design that is attached somehow and spirals around the center pole, which is a painted white metal I think-this is the only non-brass area the top is a smaller version of the base. They are very badly tarnished.
Lamps offered at auctions might be trash or may be treasure. The lamp you use daily might also be a valuable item. Determining the worth of any lighting fixture means taking a good look at some obvious clues and doing a bit of research to estimate the value.
